Technologies Products

Smith Bits is a global leader in the design, manufacture and marketing of roller cone and PDC drill bits used in oil and gas exploration. Winner of numerous awards, Smith Bits continues to garner industry recognition as the world drilling record bit performance leader for nine consecutive years and recently achieved the prestigious Hart Publishing E&P Special Meritorious Award for Engineering Innovation for the proprietary IDEAS® technology. Smith Bits now offers industry leading optimization software and database technologies using IDEAS, i-DRILL, DBOS® and the legendary Smith Drilling Records System to design cost-efficient, on-target wellbores for projects around the world.

The Smith premium percussion bit line delivers a combination of dependability, durability and performance for hard rock formation requirements. Featuring 100% diamond enhanced inserts, the Smith percussion bit is designed to increase drilling footage and result in a higher rate of penetration (ROP). The patented bit retaining system increases reliability and safety levels while decreasing bit loss risk for the most challenging hard rock formations.

Dyna-Drill® Technologies designs and manufactures down-hole motor equipment built to withstand the most demanding applications in the oil and gas industry. The company produces power sections for drilling motors; rotors and stators for progressing cavity pumps; tungsten carbide bearings and offers precision machining services. Dyna-Drill power sections have been the product of choice in the oilfield throughout the world for nearly half a century, establishing a solid reputation for consistently superior performance.

MegaDiamond designs, manufactures and markets ultra-hard materials used worldwide in cutting tools, construction, oil and gas drilling, and mining applications.

Omni Seals, Inc. serves a unique niche in the custom molding market; that of problem solver. A blend of people expertise and technologies, the Omni Seals group tackles the toughest product designs, developing successful materials that are produced and delivered on-time.

Technologies Services

i-DRILL uses state-of-the-art four dimensional modeling to analyze and predict the entire drilling system performance and behavior through the use of highly sophisticated, proprietary Finite Element Analysis (FEA) computer programs. Smith drilling engineers and directional drillers are able to quantify design changes to drill string configurations and optimize parameters by conducting case studies from the creation of “virtual” well drilling environments. Ask for i-DRILL services as a cost reducing method for the next drilling plan in any formation.

IDEAS, (Integrated Dynamic Engineering Analysis System), is a simulation modeling service used to design, test and analyze bit performance in specific applications. The IDEAS design analysis process evaluates the effect of each BHA component on the bit performance, allowing Smith drill bits to move from design concept to field proven performance significantly quicker than bits developed via traditional scenarios.

Smith Technologies offers guidance for the operator drilling team from a group of the most highly trained and experienced engineers in the oil and gas industry. These specialized engineers in Advanced Service Engineering (ASE) complement the operator drilling group, providing the best drill bit optimization solutions for specific wells in the drilling project plan. The ASE group is charged with producing unbiased recommendations to the customer, using the uncompromising goal of lowering the overall cost per foot to drill each well. Smith Technologies ASE engineers currently work at operator offices located throughout the world.

DBOS (Drill Bit Optimization System) is a software-based tool that identifies the Smith fixed cutter or roller cone bit containing the appropriate combination of cutting structure, gauge protection, hydraulic configuration and other features to achieve the lowest drilling cost per foot for the customer. Over a 15 year time span, Smith has amassed a database that includes comprehensive drilling records from more than 8,750 projects in 56 countries encompassing more than 12,500 wells. DBOS provides Smith design engineers with critical and detailed information by incorporating thorough offset well data analysis to produce an accurate match between specific bit capabilities and the physical characteristics of the proposed drilling interval.

The Smith DRS® (Drilling Records System) is the foundation for many services and processes that continually place SMITH above the competition. Originating in 1985, this comprehensive digital library of over three million bit records containing performance information on wells located around the world, provides the detailed and specific bit run history for design engineers to analyze, re-design and optimize bit performance for specific applications.
